The Victorian Era

The Victorian Era was based on Queen Victoria, who was born in 1819.  When she became 18 she was named Queen of Britain and the Commonwealth. She lead the country until she died on 22 January 1901, when her son Edward, at age 60 became the king and the Edwardian era began. The Victorian era was thought to be a period of peace and prosperity. The focus of the findings is on Victoria and her places of living and her daily life.

During this era, Queen Victoria copied styles that she liked from other countries and time periods. The main influences or personal taste appeared to be linked to the Gothic Revival Architecture and Classical periods. As you will notice everything can  be related back to that style of buildings, which became increasingly significant during her time as Queen. It became popular to see these styles in most peoples homes, such as architecture interior design, church buildings and her places of living.

The colours were used in certain ways with the richer colors in the dining rooms and library, they where used to tell the importance of the room. They used darker colors like grays and browns to also hide away the grim, dust and oil stains from the oil lamps.

The furniture was much like the architecture, it was never a new style it was just what they saw from time periods and modified. Such as the Gothic, Tudor, English Rococo and Neoclassical. But the Gothic and Rococo, seeming to be the most popular styles to have in furniture placed in their homes. A bare room was known to be of poor taste so every piece of furniture, surface was placed with objects of their reflected interest and aspirations. The dinning room was the second main important room in a home as the sideboard to the dinning room was always the focal point. The Victorian era was re-creating and mass-producing furniture from their influences, because of the industrial era that was taking place that meant new technology helped to produce things faster and better quality . The new railways allowed goods, raw materials and supply's for trades and the industry, it also helped people move about, this changed society dramatically. The railway provided better communication.

Although we don't see as much of it, but its still around today and still has its place in the interior design today.
